Hi people. For this month’s Launceston meeting, we will be taking a look at using 2D plotting library Matplotlib and array computing package NumPy to process data and create charts and graphs.
- Where:
- Enterprize
22-24 Patterson St
- When:
- Saturday 29th June
2:00pm Start
As always, everybody is welcome to come along and join the discussion. Hope to see you there!
Unfortunately the room at Enterprize Hobart is already booked out for next
Thursday, so there won’t be a meeting with talks this month as previously
planned. However, Julius has volunteered to host the TasLUG meeting while John
is away next month, so we will just switch the months around and have talks
next month instead.
This month we will instead be having a TasPubLUG at the Shambles Brewery
- When:
- 6:30pm, Thursday 9 May 2019
- Where:
- Shambles Brewery (222 Elizabeth Street Hobart)
http://www.shamblesbrewery.com.au/
If you are planning to come along (even for a quick drink) it would be great if
you can let John know. If a largish number
of people plan to come along then I’ll reserve a table.

Hi people. Apologies for the super late announcement! For this month’s Launceston meeting, Cheese will be talking about the Godot game engine and his recent experiences with making the upcoming management sim/base building game Hive Time with it. We’ll be looking at general engine usage, some patterns for input handlers, and workflows for getting 2D and 3D resources into the engine.
Want to make fancy looking games, but don’t know where to get started? Get some tips at this month’s meeting!

May is TasPubLUG time where we head to the pub to talk about Free and Open
Source software, hardware and culture… or just generally hang out and have
something to eat and drink.
Now that meetings are on the second Thursday of the month they long longer
clash with A Pint of History at the Shambles Brewery, so we figured we would
head back there.

The June meeting is still a while off yet, but we thought we would try
something a little bit different and have a bunch of short talks instead of the
usual one or two longer talks.
Some suggestions for things people might want to talk about:
- some project they are currently working on
- a useful tool/application/distro they think others should know about
- some useful tips/tricks
- a general rant about some topic
Pretty much any topic semi-related to open source software, hardware, or
culture would be welcome. If you have a topic you are a bit unsure about, feel
free to run the idea by John… he’ll most likely say yes.
If you want to give a short talk, then please drop
John a line letting him know the topic and
how long you think your talk will be. Ideally we would like to keep talks
between 2-10 minutes, but if you need more time let John know and we’ll see
what we can schedule in.
We look forward to seeing what people come up with.

Hi people! For this month’s Launceston meeting, Elliott will be discussing and demonstrating how to use Nerves to drive Raspberry Pis for custom hardware projects.
Want to know what Elixir and Nerves are, and why you would want to use them to make robots? Find the answers and a walkthrough of creating fresh project at this month’s meeting!

April is upon us and with it brings an earlier than
usual TasLUG
meeting, the second of the year to feature talks:
Ben Short
Grafana is a data visualisation and analytics platform
and the project has recently started developing a logging platform called
Loki. Ben will take you through setting up some
basic network & syslog monitoring using Grafana, Loki, and
Docker containers.
The venue for this month will be Enterprize Hobart:
- When:
- Thursday 11 April 2019 - 6:00pm for a 6:30pm start
- Where:
- Enterprize - Hobart
5th floor, Hobart City Council Building
24 Davey Street (map)
Note: the doors inside the foyer will be locked, so you will need to use the
intercom to let us know to buzz you in. However, if you arrive after 6:30pm,
then we’ll leave a note with a phone number to call as the intercom isn’t near
where the talks will be.
Enterprize provide a selection of alcoholic/non-alcoholic drinks and coffee
pods for the appropriate donation, as well as free instant coffee and tea. So
come at 6:00pm, get a drink, and have a bit of a mingle before the talks start
at 6:30pm. We will also be heading out to find somewhere to eat afterwards for
those interested.
I would like to to extend a big thank you to
Enterprize for generously allowing
us to use their space to hold regular meetings.

After reviewing the feedback from members about the possibility of changing
the Hobart TasLUG meeting
day it has been
decided that meetings will now be on the second Thursday of the month
starting from April. Thank you to everyone who filled out the survey.
We will see you all at the next Hobart meeting on Thursday 11 April.

Hi people! For this month’s Launceston meeting, we’ll be taking a look at Bash shell scripting. It doesn’t matter swhether you’re an old hand or a complete noob, there should be something in this talk for everyone. We’ll be starting with simple abstract scripts to demonstrate techniques, and moving up to useful practical examples for everyday use.
